37714
British Rail Class 37, 37714 was built at the English Electric Vulcan Foundry Newton le Willows as D6724 in August 1961. It spent its early days on the Eastern Region with allocations at Stratford, Ipswich and March, renumbering as 37024 in 1974.
It was rebuilt as part of the Heavy General Repair program in the late 1980’s as a Heavyweight locomotive from 37024 and saw service with all the Railfreight sectors. It was transferred to EWS after privatisation before being sent to Spain as part of the EWS pool building a high-speed AVE line.
On repatriation the locomotive was acquired by Direct Rail Services and was used at the Daventry Rail Terminal as a ‘Super Shunter’. Following a review of locomotives 37714 was placed into store at Barrowhill before being placed under the care of the Heavy Tractor Group on a loan basis. In 2017 37714 was purchased from DRS by the Heavy Tractor Group.
A repaint into Trainload Metals livery was carried out at Loram UK, and the loco was named “Cardiff Canton”. Since then she has remained in traffic at the Great Central Railway, cared for by The Heavy Tractor Group.
